Motion Graphics Reel 2013

Been super busy but found time to throw together a Motion Graphics Reel for work I've done over the past year. I get a lot of interest in this stuff so I figured I'd make the decision easier for potential clients by just smashing a bunch of it into one easy clip.

After Effects Workflow Tip - Color Labels

I find when working on a project, all the little things add up - especially when it comes to saving time and being organized to make production easier. Approaching the colored labels in After Effects, they can be extremely helpful especially when dealing with larger files containing a vast amount of assets - and particularly when those assets are very similar in nature but you need a way to digest or create further structure.

In the project called out here, I had an animation composed of dozens of smaller animations that I needed to control within the composition. By breaking them down into rows, which was my preference at the time, and assigning colors to them respectively - you can see it will make your brain a lot happier when it comes to digesting everything on the screen, and allow you to spend a little less time fumbling around on the way to your goals.

This is one example, but it's a great application for pretty much every situation. Even on smaller projects I still usually always have a system going where I define a different color for my different content and elements - whatever keeps that particular workflow easier to negotiate.

Necro "Gore" Animated Music Video

I've been banging out this video with Necro for a little while and it finally dropped tonight. It's pretty much all hand drawn animation A to Z, with a combination of Photoshop, Toon Boom, and After Effects. Immense amount of work for this one, definitely my largest project by sheer volume. I don't usually get to spill a lot of blood either, so this was a nice change of pace.

Necro "GORE" Artwork Teaser

Wrapping up a new music video I created with Necro for his song GORE, this was something I created to go with it. A still from the thematic animated graffiti piece - full project to follow soon.

Map Traveling Animation

Here's a piece I whipped up in After Effects to be cut into a travel video and placed between shots.

I created the map in Photoshop based on the maximum zoomed in resolution so it would retain quality through all the camera movements.

Notepad animation with kinetic text

This was a piece I put together recently on a pretty tight deadline. It starts off as a notepad type of whiteboard animation and transcends into kinetic text towards the end. Pretty much all Photoshop and After Effects. Not my most titillating piece as it's more informational than entertainment, but demonstrates a little variety.

2D Animation frames - axe maniac

This was a shot I took of a project I'm working on, a sequence of character animation frames with onion-skinning turned on, which lets you see ghosts of the following drawings. Working on this one in Toon Boom Animation software.

Character Costume Variants

Another month that just keeps flying by... Here was the remaining piece I did for the Gnome General concept art, a character design sheet with various different costumes and themes. It's actually a photo of my monitor, (Thanks instagram, you can find me @filthywill by the way) but I think it's just as effective.

Concept Painting 3 - Gnome Battle

This was one of the final concept art pieces I had created for a game in development. It is a Gnome battle game and this was just trying to capture the moment during game play.

Painted in Photoshop. You can see it consists of two opposing teams, and gnomes vary in size as well as their roles.

ESPN College Gameday intro

A few months ago I did some work helping hook up the set for the new ESPN College Gameday basketball intro, in which a big Mackelmore & Ryan Lewis party was shot. My contribution involved drawing and painting a lot of signs - most of them intentionally sloppy or amateur - to look like the kids holding them actually made them for a game. Lots of them.

Some of my craftsmanship can be seen in the following shots, namely the B-A-S-K-E-T-B-A-L-L arrangement in the center.

Snowduts

This was a little piece I threw together - since we got snow last weekend, I figured I would make the best of it.

Just went out and filmed this on a Canon t3i, and got a little busy in After Effects. The "Filthy" license plate was made in Photoshop and tracked for the first shot. The compositing effects are pretty self-explanatory - I basically masked/rotoscoped out the different clips with my car and the snow as they were all from the same frame in a couple of the shots where you see that take place. Also some selective time remapping for impact.
